About the Course

SOLD OUT!

Take your love of embroidery to the next level in this two day workshop.  Join me in this small, friendly class where you will hand embroider a colourful peacock head onto beautiful vintage fabric.  Suitable for all levels of ability, although some experience with hand embroidery would be advantageous.

This workshop will introduce you to a number of techniques, and you will be able to choose from a selection of gorgeous vintage fabrics from my extensive collection, for the background of your picture.

We will start with design - selecting a peacock image and background fabric, thinking about composition, colour and shading, and stitch direction.  Going beyond standard techniques, we will also consider stitch “styles” and how you might develop your own, which may be very different to mine!  We will then move onto transferring the design onto vintage fabric, and hooping up, in preparation for stitching.  The main body of the workshop will be spent embroidering our beautiful peacock portraits.  I will demonstrate various stitches that you can use such as outline stitches (e.g. split back stitch, whipped back stitch), silk shading (also known as thread painting), couching, and French knots.  I will demonstrate how to stitch an eye, a beak, and feathers…techniques that you can use to create all manner of birds going forward!  Due to the slow nature of hand embroidery, it’s very unlikely that you will complete your peacock over the weekend, but by the end of the workshop you will be confident enough in your skills to finish it in your own time.  On the final afternoon of the workshop I will demonstrate how to mount a finished peacock on the wooden stretcher provided, so that you can complete this final step at home.

The workshop cost includes all materials and equipment.  You will be given a kit to keep (comprising embroidery hoop, calico, vintage fabric, needles, embroidery threads, wooden stretcher frame).  You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifier if you need them, but scissors can be borrowed during the workshop.

We will break for tea and biscuits (provided), and for lunch (please bring with you).

If you would like to cancel your booking please notify me as soon as possible, and no later than two weeks before the workshop, for a full refund.  If you cancel less than two weeks before the workshop I will offer a refund if I am able to fill your place, but cannot guarantee this.  If I cancel the workshop I will offer a full refund.

Yvette Phillips

Yvette is a textile and embroidery artist based in south Oxfordshire. The use of specifically vintage textiles is central to her practice as an artist, not just for their aesthetics, but for how they connect with our lives and memories. They can provoke an emotional response, and have an inherent history that makes transforming them into something new a meaningful process. As well as recycling something that would otherwise be discarded, they give a resonance and sense of a past life to Yvette’s new pieces. She combines them with free-motion machine and detailed hand embroidery to create bold pieces in a rich palette of colours, patterns, and textures.
