11th July 10am - 4.30pm Get hooked on the captivating craft of bookbinding this summer; on a one-day introduction to bookbinding workshop with expert bookbinder Lorna McCurdy. During this workshop, participants will learn how to make a handbound single-section notebook, with a hardback quarter-cloth and decorative paper cover. They will discover essential hand bookbinding skills including folding, cutting, sewing and creating book covers. This course is ideal for anyone wanting to learn about bookbinding, from complete beginners to those who want to revive their bookbinding skills. All materials and tools will be provided. Each book will be made using excellent quality cartridge paper for the inside. The hardback covers will be covered with a strip of beautiful book cloth combined with a choice of decorative paper – such as marbled or hand printed. There will be a delectable selection of papers and cloths which participants can choose from at the workshop. TAKE HOME At the end of the day students will have made a handbound book to take home. These books will be perfect as a notebook or sketchbook, a slim journal, as a gift or keepsake. Students will have learnt some of the important skills needed for bookbinding by hand, such as identifying paper grain, preparing paper for sewing and casing-in a book. Students will then be ready to start bookbinding at home, able to use these skills and techniques to make books on their own with just a few easily acquired tools and materials. ESSENTIAL INFORMATION: -This course is suitable for beginners and those with more experience alike. -Some level of dexterity is required, especially for sewing and the use of craft knives for cutting. If you have questions about this please contact us. -All tools and materials are provided, but feel free to bring your own tools or papers if you have them. A retractable pencil and notebook are excellent essential tools for all budding bookbinders. You can bring an apron to protect your clothes. -Materials used will include cartridge paper, book-cloth, linen thread, decorative paper, and greyboard. LUNCH Treat yourself to a delicious £14 meal provided by local deli, The Goring Grocer, known for their exceptional food. The lunch includes a generous slice of quiche, seasonal salad, and a homemade sweet treat. You are also welcome to bring your own packed lunch. Hot drinks and biscuits will be available all day.

We are keen to help anyone with an ailment or disability attend our creative workshops. If you have any concerns please contact us directly and we will discuss with you the appropriate actions we can take to help you. Training will be given, however participants must be aware that sharp tools may be used and you must take responsibility for your own safety. We are unable to offer refunds 28 days before the workshop starts unless another person is able to take the place. Contact us directly if you are no longer able to attend and we will endeavor to find someone else. In case of cancellation you will receive a refund or the opportunity to attend another workshop. ABOUT THE ARTIST Lorna McCurdy is a bookbinder specialising in handmade books, book restoration and bespoke box making. From her bindery in rural Berkshire, she makes books with a focus on fine craftsmanship, the pinnacle being her unique fine bindings, where the book becomes a work of art. As well as restoring antiquarian and all manner of books, Lorna undertakes the rebinding of books in a historical style. She also excels in bespoke, made-to-measure boxes and portfolios for the storage of books, photos and precious objects.
