18th July 10am - 4.30pm Penny, your tutor, will guide you through a range of straw and textile techniques, with a focus on traditional straw plaiting used in heritage straw designs. Alongside straw work, you will explore simple textile techniques to add texture and detail, building confidence as your piece develops. Design and making your own unique crown or headband piece in a creative and relaxing day. Taking inspiration from historical sources, vibrant carnivals & summer revelry you will start the day exploring ideas for the shape of your crown or headband. Choose from a selection of fabrics to create your base, forming the foundation for your design. Step by step, you will learn how to handle and shape straw, as well as how to incorporate it into your design. Later in the day you will begin to personalise your crown or headband with decorative elements. Learn a range of straw and textile techniques to embellish your headpiece. This includes mastering the traditional straw hat plait, as well as exploring other decorative methods using straw. You can choose to create tassels, pom-poms, Suffolk puffs or fabric flowers, or learn how to craft delicate flowers from recycled tin and other metals.
