Painting with Thread
Hand embroider a delicate Adonis Blue butterfly onto vintage silk
11th July 10am - 4pm Join Yvette Phillips for a relaxed day of stitching while exploring the art of thread painting and creating a beautiful hand embroidered butterfly on vintage silk. During this one-day workshop embroidery artist Yvette will show you how to use thread painting to bring to life an elegant Adonis Blue butterfly, inspired by a charming vintage Will’s Cigarettes card. You will work on gorgeous pink vintage silk fabric, and learn embroidery techniques you can continue to use at home. Thread painting, also known as needle painting, is a hand embroidery technique that uses stranded embroidery thread to blend colours together, much like painting. The long and short stitch is most commonly used, but for this butterfly design Yvette will also introduce split back stitch and couching stitch. For ease during the workshop, the butterfly design will have been pre-drawn onto the fabric ready for you , with the silk already mounted onto a small 12x12 cm wooden stretcher frames, rather than an embroidery hoop. By the end of the day you will leave with the skills and confidence to complete the butterfly at home at your own pace. ESSENTIAL INFORMATION -This workshop isn’t suitable for absolute beginners; some hand embroidery experience is recommended and you should be comfortable handling a needle and thread. -As the work is very detailed, please bring glasses if you need them. ABOUT THE ARTIST Yvette is a textile and embroidery artist based in Oxfordshire. Vintage textiles sit at the heart of her practice, loved not only for their beauty but for the memories and quiet histories they hold. These fabrics often carry traces of past lives, and working with them allows her to honour that story while giving them a new one. Transforming materials that might otherwise be discarded feels both meaningful and sustainable. She combines reclaimed textiles with free-motion machine stitching and detailed hand embroidery to create bold, expressive pieces, often featuring birds and small mammals, rich in colour, pattern and texture. www.yvettephillipsart.com
