
The Fun of Free Motion Embroidery
An adventure with your sewing machine: embroidery drawing with stitches telling a story.
Description
ON THE DAY Join Harriet Riddell to kick start or accelerate your love of stitching . In this one day workshop you will learn free motion embroidery, Harriet will get you all to get loose and find your inner artist. You will learn free motion embroidery using raw edge applique technique and clever dissolvable templates. The aim is to become more confident with drawing with your sewing machine. The day starts with a look at portraits as a motif, stitched words and storytelling. Next we study the face and learn proportions, with an emphasis on keeping loose and energetic drawings. Then we dive into stitched portraits using appliqué and stitched words to tell a story. Harriet encourages everyone’s unique style and will always be happy to adapt the workshop to your specific ideas. MATERIALS AND TOOLS Canvas for the whole day A selection of colourful fabrics and threads A sheet of dissolvable paper printed to your own design. WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU Sewing machine (oiled and lint free) with an extension table if you have one * (if a sewing machine is a problem, get in touch and we will be able to help) Reading glasses if you need them for close work Free motion embroidery foot (there will be some to borrow/buy too) Colourful/ personal fabrics you would like to use but fabric will be available Pictures of interest, people, place or thing for inspiration {???Maybe need to be provided OR can be requested in the email to participants at a later date Needles size 12/14 (I have some if you need) Sharp small embroidery scissors – essential Thread- black and colours (I use coats moon thread) Extension lead (might be helpful) A free standing mirror (I have some if you don’t)???} TAKE HOME Several embroidery stitched drawings Encouragement and the infectious enthusiasm to continue to take your stitching in any direction you want. ABOUT YOUR TUTOR Harriet Riddell is a textile performance artist who has traveled around the world with her sewing machine stitching portraits and landscapes from life. Harriet’s love of interacting with people and going on adventures inspires her to create her artwork. Harriet's stitch drawings appear in a single line of thread, using applique techniques to add colour and words to add a story. Learn to free-style stitch, without drawing on the fabric first and directly stitching this curious world onto canvas.

We are keen to help anyone with an ailment or disability attend our creative workshops. If you have any concerns please contact us directly and we will discuss with you the appropriate actions we can take to help you. Training will be given, however participants must be aware that sharp tools may be used and you must take responsibility for your own safety. We are unable to offer refunds 28 days before the workshop starts unless another person is able to take the place. Contact us directly if you are no longer able to attend and we will endeavor to find someone else. In case of cancellation you will receive a refund or the opportunity to attend another workshop. While all measures are taken to ensure the safety of your belongings on the day, we are not liable for any loss or damage.
