8th August 10am - 4.30pm Join textile performance artist Harriet Riddell for a joyful and inspiring day of creative exploration. Set in the beautiful Coaching Barn, we will spend the day with our sewing machines whirring as you learn how to transform your sewing machine into a drawing and storytelling tool. Harriet will guide you through a range of techniques that allow you to create expressive stitched artwork. Using fabric as your “paint”, you will learn how to layer colours, stitch freely and experiment with reverse appliqué to build texture and depth in your work. We will explore cutting through layers of fabric to reveal hidden colours beneath, creating exciting visual effects and unique compositions. Throughout the day you will try several creative exercises. We begin with observational stitch drawings inspired by flowers, helping you loosen up and gain confidence with free-motion stitching. Harriet will also introduce drawing techniques that translate beautifully into stitched lines. Later, we will experiment with stitched abstract portraits using a technique inspired by traditional Mola textiles, combining bold shapes with expressive stitching. The workshop is designed for people at all stages of their creative journey. If you love drawing or painting but have never considered using a sewing machine as an artistic tool, this workshop will open up an exciting new way of making. Equally, if you are confident using a sewing machine but want to push your creativity in a more artistic direction, Harriet will help you explore new possibilities.
