Neil Taylor

Furniture Maker

30 years on now as a designer and maker and my career has become one of intuitive learning and exploration from my original training as an apprentice in woods near Ledbury, Herefordshire in Greenwood working.

Combining old and new designs and practices, I am inspired from the primitive Welsh stick chairs and West Country lobster pot styles that might have been painted once to brighten up a dark room.
I’m leaving the natural wood grain alongside Pickled dark colours to highlight the profiles of my seats. This creates a juxtaposition of the old and new , traditional and contemporary.

All the seats are hollowed out with a traditional Adze especially made for me by Hans Karlsson in Sweden - alternatively an electrical carving tool is used if the grain of the wood is too difficult to cut.

They encourage sitting, inviting to the eye as well as being used everyday as a functional work of art - good design is timeless.

Utilising the Swedish carving Axe alongside an old Sheffield drawknife I can shape the components on my shavehorse made from Cedar, Oak and Sweet Chestnut.

I’m currently using native Herefordshire hardwoods such as Oak, Ash and Walnut among others.

You can see me at many shows and fairs throughout the UK inwhich to view and purchase my work. Details are on my showlist on website.
